Key takeaways

  • An accountant resume is judged on credentials, systems, and proof of accurate, on-time work, in that order.
  • Write your CPA status exactly: licensed, sections passed with dates, or eligible, and place it by your status.
  • Quantify scope and speed: entities, revenue size, accounts reconciled, days to close, and audit results.
  • Audit, tax, corporate, and FP&A roles reward different evidence, so tailor the title, summary, and top bullets to the track.
  • Keyword tools catch the systems and acronyms a posting repeats, but read the posting yourself for one-off duties.

A strong accountant resume makes your CPA status impossible to miss. It leads with scope: entities, revenue, and accounts. And it proves speed and accuracy with close and audit numbers.

Here is a full sample for a senior accountant, then a fill-in template you can copy. After those come the format, pay data, and wording for every CPA status.

Accountant resume example: senior accountant with a CPA#

This sample is for a CPA with six years of experience who moved from a CPA firm to a corporate role. Isaac, his employers, and every figure are fictional.

Three things make this sample work. The CPA sits in the name line and in its own section, so a recruiter confirms it in one glance. Scope comes before any bullet: three entities and $240M in revenue. And both speed (days to close) and accuracy (aged items, clean audits) have numbers.

Accountant resume format and section order#

Use reverse-chronological order on one page, saved as a PDF. Controllers reading resumes check numbers for a living. A clean, plain layout lets them find the figures fast.

Where the license line goes depends on your status. Use this table to pick the order.

Your statusWhere the credential goesSection order
Licensed CPAName line and a License sectionSummary, experience, skills, license, education
CPA exam in progressA CPA Exam section under the summarySummary, CPA exam, experience, skills, education
Student or new gradA CPA plan line inside educationSummary, education, experience, skills
CMA, EA, or CIA holderName line and a Certifications sectionSummary, experience, skills, certifications, education

Keep the page to one column with plain headings such as Experience, Skills, License, and Education. Applicant tracking systems read those reliably. Every one of Resume Trail's 1,000 layouts is a single page. Extra text makes the type smaller, with 8 pt as the limit. That leaves a manager room for ten years in detail, with older roles cut to one line.

Applying abroad? Outside the US, "CV" usually means the same document as a resume. The structure above works for an accountant CV in most countries, though some expect personal details or a longer history. Our guide to CV vs. resume covers the local differences.

What accountants earn: BLS pay and outlook#

The August 2026 BLS handbook release is the source here. Its pay data is from May 2025, and its projections run from 2025 to 2035. A new release each year replaces them.

In that release, accountants and auditors earned a median of $83,680. BLS counted about 1,595,200 jobs in 2025 and projects 5% growth through 2035, faster than average. That works out to about 115,300 openings a year.

Accounting firms employ 21% of these workers. But finance, insurance, and company head offices pay more at the median. BLS also expects cloud tools and AI to automate some routine tasks. It doesn't expect that to cut overall demand. Instead, analysis and advice should become a bigger part of the job. So put judgment work near the top: revenue recognition, controls, audit coordination, and variance explanations.

CPA status: write it exactly#

In accounting, your credential carries a lot of weight. A recruiter should never have to guess whether you're licensed, partway through the exam, or still planning.

Your statusHow to write itWhere it goes
Licensed CPA"Isaac Cohen, CPA" and "Certified Public Accountant, Wisconsin, 2021"Name line and license section
Passed all sections, awaiting license"CPA exam passed (all sections); license expected June 2027"CPA exam section and summary
Partway through the exam"CPA candidate: passed FAR and AUD; REG scheduled March 2027"CPA exam section
Meets education rule, not started"CPA eligible (Illinois); first section planned for 2027"CPA exam section
Still in school"B.S. Accounting, May 2027; plan to license via the 150-hour path"Education section

Don't put "CPA" after your name until a state board licenses you. Claiming it early can cost you the offer when the employer checks.

Note

BLS notes that any accountant who files reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be a licensed CPA. For public company reporting roles, your license belongs in the top line.

CPA exam sections and licensure paths#

The AICPA's overview of what the CPA Exam tests lists six sections: AUD, FAR, REG, BAR, ISC, and TCP. You take the three core sections (AUD, FAR, and REG) plus one of the other three. Use these short forms on your resume, since recruiters know them.

The education rule is changing. For years, every state required 150 semester hours, about 30 more than a bachelor's degree. The BLS handbook still says so. But NASBA's December 2025 summary describes three model paths:

  • Graduate degree: an accounting graduate degree plus one year of experience.
  • 150 hours: a bachelor's degree in accounting plus 30 more credits, with one year of experience.
  • 120 hours: a bachelor's degree in accounting plus two years of experience.

Each state has to pass its own law, and start dates vary. Check your state board before you write a target date. Then name the path on your resume, such as "120-hour path; experience complete May 2028."

CMA, CIA, CISA, and EA#

  • CMA (Certified Management Accountant): useful for corporate, cost, and FP&A roles.
  • CIA (Certified Internal Auditor): the standard credential for internal audit.
  • CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor): valuable for IT audit and SOX technology roles.
  • EA (Enrolled Agent): an IRS credential that strengthens tax resumes.

Match the resume to your track#

The word "accountant" covers several careers. BLS names public, management, and government accountants, plus three kinds of auditors: internal, external, and IT. Each rewards different proof. Pick your track and tune the title, summary, and first bullets to it.

TrackTypical titlesLead withNumbers that fit
External auditAudit associate, audit seniorEngagements, industries, controls testingEngagements a year, client size, team size
TaxTax associate, tax seniorReturn types, entities, researchReturns prepared, entities, savings found
Corporate and general ledgerStaff or senior accountantClose, reconciliations, reportingDays to close, accounts reconciled
Internal audit and SOXInternal auditor, SOX analystControls, risk, fixesControls tested, findings closed
FP&A-leaningAccounting and planning analystBudgets, forecasts, variance analysisForecast accuracy, budget size
AP, AR, and payrollAP or AR accountantVolume, accuracy, cashInvoices a month, days sales outstanding

The quickest way to tailor is to rewrite your summary's first line for the track:

Accountant summary openers by track

External audit: Audit senior with 4 years at a regional CPA firm, leading fieldwork on 6 engagements a year for manufacturing and healthcare clients with $20M–$400M in revenue.

Tax: Tax senior with 5 years preparing and reviewing partnership, S corporation, and individual returns, handling 150+ returns a season in UltraTax CS.

Corporate: Staff accountant with 3 years in NetSuite, owning 40 account reconciliations and the fixed asset subledger for a $90M distributor.

Internal audit: Internal auditor with 4 years testing SOX controls across order-to-cash and procure-to-pay, closing 85% of findings within one quarter.

Moving from public accounting to industry#

The most common move is from a CPA firm to a corporate team. Industry managers like audit experience, but they want proof you can own a process, not just test one. Translate your firm work:

  • Engagements become processes. Testing revenue controls for 6 clients shows you know how a sale turns into cash.
  • Clients become industries. A manufacturer will value your inventory and cost work.
  • Audit requests become audit readiness. You know what auditors ask for, which makes you the natural audit lead.
  • Reviewing associates becomes review skill. You can check a team's entries and reconciliations.

Moving toward analysis instead? See our guides to the financial analyst resume and the business analyst resume.

Close, reconciliation, and audit numbers that prove accuracy#

Many resumes still say "prepared journal entries and reconciliations." Numbers turn that duty into proof. Use the ones your role tracked.

Close-cycle areaCount thisHow it reads on the page
Month-end closeDays to close, entities, revenue"Cut close from 9 to 5 business days for 3 entities"
ReconciliationsAccounts a month, aged items"Reconcile 65 accounts; aged items cut from 31 to 4"
Journal entriesVolume, automation"Automated 22 recurring entries in NetSuite"
Audit supportRequests, adjustments"140+ auditor requests on time; no adjustments"
TaxReturns, entity types"Prepared 150+ partnership and S corp returns a season"
AP and ARInvoices, days sales outstanding"Cut days sales outstanding from 52 to 41"
SavingsDollars found or saved"Recovered $86K in duplicate vendor payments"

For corporate roles, days to close is the metric readers know best. A shorter close means leaders get numbers sooner. It often comes from better tools and cleaner reconciliations. If you helped shorten the close, lead with it. If not, show your part: the accounts, entities, or subledgers you own.

Warning

In public accounting, don't name clients or reveal anything specific about their books. Describe them by industry and revenue range instead. Recruiters expect it, and it shows you understand confidentiality.

Our guide to quantifying achievements has more ways to find and phrase honest numbers.

Standards and systems: list only what you've applied#

Standards are strong keywords, but only when you've done real work under them. Spell each out once in plain words, since HR screeners may not know the codes:

  • ASC 606 (revenue from customer contracts): you reviewed contracts, set up performance obligations, or reconciled deferred revenue.
  • ASC 842 (leases): you built or kept a lease schedule, or helped move leases into a system.
  • SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls): you documented, tested, or owned key controls.
  • GASB (government accounting standards): you worked on public-sector statements.

If you only studied a standard in school, list it under coursework instead. Interviewers often ask you to walk through how you applied it.

The Labor Department's O*NET profile marks Excel, QuickBooks, and SAP as in-demand tools for this job. Every accountant lists Excel, so name the features that show real skill: XLOOKUP, pivot tables, SUMIFS, Power Query, and macros. Only list what you could show in a skills test, since many employers give one. Our guide to technical skills on a resume covers how to present tools.

What a keyword finder pulls from a sample staff accountant posting#

To see which terms a tool would flag, a sample staff accountant posting was written for this guide. It asks for NetSuite, FloQast, GAAP, SOX, ASC 842 lease work, and two or more years of experience. It was pasted into the free job description keyword finder, which runs in your browser on fixed rules.

The finder listed 12 terms. The most repeated were NetSuite, CPA, FloQast, and "staff accountant," each twice. It also pulled the two stated requirements: a bachelor's degree in accounting and 2+ years of experience.

Next, Isaac's sample resume and the posting went into the resume keyword scanner. It scored a 60% match: 6 of 10 terms found. Here is what it reported, with an honest fix for each gap.

Term from the postingIn the sample?Honest fix
NetSuite, CPA, Excel, audit, SOX, ASCYesNone needed
GAAPNoAdd "US GAAP" to skills, since ASC 606 and 842 are part of it
ComplianceNoWrite "SOX compliance testing" in the audit bullet
FloQastNoDon't add it; name BlackLine, a similar close tool, in the cover letter
Staff accountantNoUse the title only if you'd truly take a staff role

The tool caught named systems, acronyms, and phrases the posting repeated. It didn't flag duties that appeared only once, such as "fixed asset subledger" and "bank reconciliations." So read the posting yourself for those, too.

Entry-level accountant resume: students, interns, and bookkeepers#

Campus hiring at CPA firms runs on a calendar, so students compete on education, internships, and exam plans. O*NET reports that 69% of surveyed workers in this job say a bachelor's degree is required. That makes your education section carry extra weight early on.

Put these in your education section:

  • Degree, school, and graduation date (or expected date).
  • GPA if it's 3.0 or higher, and major GPA if it's stronger.
  • Your path to licensure: 150 hours, a master's program, or your state's 120-hour path with experience.
  • Relevant coursework, such as intermediate accounting, auditing, tax, and accounting systems.

Our guides to GPA on a resume and relevant coursework explain when each is worth including.

Entry-level accountant experience bullets

Audit Intern | Regional CPA firm | Jan–Apr 2026

- Tested 120+ revenue and expense samples across 3 engagements and documented results in CaseWare

- Prepared bank and cash confirmations for 2 nonprofit clients, tying out balances within 1 week

VITA Volunteer | Campus tax clinic | Feb–Apr 2025

- Prepared 45 federal and state returns for low-income filers, with all returns accepted on first submission

Bookkeeper (part-time) | Family-owned landscaping business | 2023–2025

- Kept the books in QuickBooks Online for a $600K business, reconciling 3 bank accounts monthly

Many staff accountants start as bookkeepers or AP and AR clerks. If that's your path, show accountant-level work. Name the reconciliations you own, the accruals you prepare, and any error you caught before it reached the statements. Pair that with your degree progress. Our internship resume guide covers class projects and internships in more depth.

Tip

Put your CPA plan on the resume even as a student, such as "Plan to sit for FAR in summer 2027." Firms hire with licensure in mind, and a dated plan shows commitment.

Managers and controllers: what changes#

Once you manage people, shift from personal output to team and process results. Lead each role with team size, entity count, and revenue. Then show systems you put in, audit outcomes, controls you strengthened, and staff you developed.

Accounting manager and controller bullets

- Manage a team of 5 accountants and the full close for a $400M company with 7 entities in 3 currencies

- Led the NetSuite rollout for accounting, going live on schedule with no missed closes

- Fixed 2 material weaknesses from the prior-year audit; received a clean SOX opinion the next year

- Cut annual audit fees 15% by preparing a complete request package before fieldwork started

Stay on one page at this level by trimming older roles to a title, firm, and dates. Keep the last ten years in full.

Before you send it#

Check these before every application:

  1. Your credential status is precise and in the top third of the page.
  2. The title and summary match the track: audit, tax, corporate, internal audit, or FP&A.
  3. Each recent role shows scope, such as entities, revenue, clients, or accounts.
  4. At least two bullets show a result: a shorter close, a clean audit, or money recovered.
  5. The standards and systems from the posting that you've truly used appear in skills and bullets.
  6. Every number matches across the summary and bullets.

That last check matters more here than in most fields. A revenue figure in your summary that differs from the one in a bullet is a red flag to an accounting reader. Our guide on how to tailor your resume covers the full routine. For the interview, our guide to behavioral interview questions shows how to turn your close or audit bullets into short stories.

Frequently asked questions

Include a header with your name and any credential, such as CPA; a two or three sentence summary; reverse-chronological experience with numbers in the bullets; a skills section with accounting areas, standards, and named software; a license or CPA exam section; and education. Keep it to one page, from staff accountant to controller.

List it in a CPA exam or certifications section with the sections passed and a date for the rest, for example: CPA candidate, passed FAR and AUD, REG scheduled for March 2027. If you meet your state's education rule but haven't started, write CPA eligible with the state. Never write CPA after your name until a state board licenses you.

List core accounting work such as month-end close, account reconciliation, journal entries, accruals, and financial reporting; standards such as US GAAP, ASC 606, ASC 842, and SOX; and named systems such as NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, BlackLine, and advanced Excel. Match the list to the posting and back each skill with a bullet.

Count scope and speed. Useful numbers include entities or clients handled, revenue or asset size, accounts reconciled per month, journal entries posted, days to close, audit requests delivered, returns prepared, dollars recovered, and days sales outstanding. Show a before and after when you improved something, such as cutting the close from nine days to five.

Lead with education: degree, expected graduation, relevant coursework, GPA if 3.0 or higher, and your path to CPA licensure. Some states now allow a bachelor's degree plus two years of experience instead of 150 credit hours, so name the path you plan to use. Then list internships, part-time bookkeeping, or VITA tax volunteering with numbers.

No. Client relationships are usually confidential. Describe clients by industry and size instead, for example manufacturing and nonprofit clients with revenue from 20 million to 400 million dollars. That gives recruiters the scope they need without breaking confidentiality, and it shows good professional judgment.

Yes. Staff accountants, audit seniors, and new graduates fit easily. Managers and controllers can stay on one page too by keeping the last ten years in detail and cutting older roles to a single line with title, firm, and dates. Lead each recent role with team size, entities, and revenue so the page carries your scope.

Use reverse-chronological order on one page, saved as a PDF. Put a licensed CPA in the name line and in a license section near the bottom. Exam candidates should put a CPA exam section near the top, and students should lead with education. Use a single column and plain headings so applicant tracking systems read it cleanly.
