Sales Resume: Examples and Writing Guide From SDR to Manager
Write a sales resume that proves quota attainment: a full AE sample, an entry-level sample, field sales bullets, objective examples, and BLS pay data.

Key takeaways
- Quota attainment is the first number sales leaders look for, so state the amount, the quota, the percentage, and the period.
- Write down your attainment for every period before you draft a bullet; the pattern tells you what to lead with.
- Give every result context: segment, deal size, sales cycle, and territory tell a reader how hard the number was.
- Match bullets to your role: meetings and pipeline for SDRs, closed revenue for AEs, territory growth for field reps, team results for managers.
- A missed-quota year is common; lead with what you controlled, such as rank, pipeline built, or deal size, rather than hiding the year.
A strong sales resume leads with quota attainment: what you closed, against what quota, in what period, and where you ranked. Then it gives each number context, such as deal size, sales cycle, and segment.
Here is a full account executive sample. After it come an entry-level sample, pay data, and bullets for SDR, field, and manager roles.
Sales resume example: mid-market account executive#
This sample is for an account executive with six years in sales, three of them in mid-market. Arjun and Northline Software are fictional, like every number in the sample.

Where the sample puts the scoreboard#
A sales leader looks for three things. In this sample, each one is easy to find:
- Did you hit your number? The headline says five straight years above quota. Each closing role then gives the amount, the quota, the percentage, and the year.
- How hard was the number? The summary gives deal size ($45K ACV), cycle length, and segment. Closing $1M in 30-day deals is a different job from closing $1M in nine-month deals.
- Are you growing? SDR to SMB AE to mid-market AE at one company shows other managers trusted Arjun with more. Our guide to multiple positions at the same company covers other ways to show promotions.
Sales rep pay and job outlook#
All BLS figures here are from the handbook's August 2026 release: May 2025 pay and a 2025–35 outlook. Expect new numbers when BLS publishes its next update.
In that release, wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives earned a median of $76,460. Reps selling technical and scientific products earned $104,920. Those selling other products earned $72,080. BLS counted about 1,571,400 of these jobs in 2025. It projects little to no change through 2035, but about 123,400 openings a year as people leave the field.
Those numbers don't cover every sales job. BLS has no category just for software account executives. Some are counted with technical products. Others fall under sales reps of services, a separate group. O*NET lists sales representatives of services at a 2025 median of $69,990, with about 1,272,700 workers. Treat all of these as a rough guide for SaaS pay, since commission makes up so much of it.
Many reps aim for management. The BLS reports that sales managers earned a median of $148,270 in May 2025. It projects 4% growth for the role from 2025 to 2035. Employers usually want several years of sales experience first, so your rep resume should already show some leadership.
Build your attainment history before you write#
Before you draft a single bullet, write down your attainment for every period you can document. Use quarters if you have them and years if you don't. Copy this table into a spreadsheet and fill it in from your commission statements or stack-ranking reports.
Here it is filled in for a hypothetical AE with four years of records:
| Period | Quota | Closed | Attainment | Rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $600K | $528K | 88% | #9 of 12 | Ramp year; built $1.4M in pipeline |
| 2023 | $800K | $872K | 109% | #4 of 12 | First full year |
| 2024 | $900K | $1.06M | 118% | #2 of 12 | President's Club |
| 2025 | $1.0M | $1.20M | 120% | #2 of 12 | Largest deal: $140K |
Patterns jump out fast once the rows are side by side:
- A steady record above 100% becomes your headline.
- A rising trend after a slow ramp becomes a growth story.
- One dip with a strong rank becomes a footnote you can explain.

| Label | Value |
|---|---|
| 2022 (ramp year) | 88% |
| 2023 | 109% |
| 2024 | 118% |
| 2025 | 120% |
For this rep, the summary line writes itself: "Exceeded quota 3 straight years, averaging 116%." The ramp year gets one line about the pipeline it built. That framing is honest, and it puts the strongest pattern first.
How to write the quota line#
A strong quota bullet has four parts: the amount, the target, the percentage, and the period. Add a rank when you can. "Closed $1.32M in new ARR against a $1.1M quota in 2025 (120%), ranking #2 of 14 AEs" leaves nothing to guess.
Real careers are messier than one clean year. This table covers the common cases.
| Situation | How to write it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Exceeded quota | Amount, quota, percentage, period | "Closed $1.32M against $1.1M quota in 2025 (120%)" |
| Over quota many times | Count of periods above quota | "Exceeded quota 7 of 8 quarters" |
| Ranked on a team | Rank, team size, measure | "Ranked #2 of 14 AEs on new ARR" |
| Missed in a tough year | Rank or what you controlled | "94% of quota; ranked #3 of 12 in a down year" |
| No quota yet | Activity and outcome | "Booked 14 meetings a month vs. goal of 10" |
| Confidential revenue | Percentages and ranks only | "118% of annual quota; President's Club" |
President's Club, top-rep awards, and rookie-of-the-year honors are strong proof because someone else checked your results. Put them in the role where you earned them. Our guide to awards on a resume covers the format.
Use numbers you can defend. Hiring managers often ask for proof, such as commission statements or stack-ranking reports. Some call references to confirm rankings, so never round 94% up to 100%.
If you missed quota#
Missing quota is common, so one bad year won't sink you. In Salesforce's 2024 State of Sales survey of 5,500 sales professionals, 84% said they missed quota the year before. And 67% didn't expect to hit it that year.

| Label | Value |
|---|---|
| Missed quota last year | 84% |
| Time spent on non-selling tasks | 70% |
| Don't expect to hit quota this year | 67% |
Treat this as self-reported data from a sales software company, not a precise industry rate. Salesforce's newer 2026 edition focuses on AI agents. Its public statistics page doesn't repeat the quota question, so 2024 is the latest figure from this series.
Still, the point stands. Hiring managers have seen plenty of missed years. They want to know how you did against your peers and what you controlled. For a missed year, lead with rank, pipeline created, win rate, deal size, or new logos. If your whole team missed after a pricing change or territory cut, a top rank tells the real story.
Sales resume bullets by career stage#
What impresses a sales leader changes with the role. Each set below fits one stage. All numbers are examples, so swap in your own.
Sales development representative (SDR or BDR)#
Show activity, meetings, pipeline, and readiness for a closing role.
- Booked an average of 14 qualified meetings a month against a goal of 10, ranking #2 of 12 SDRs over 4 quarters
- Sourced 62 opportunities worth $1.9M in pipeline; 11 closed for about $480K in new ARR
- Built an outbound sequence for the healthcare segment that lifted reply rates from 3% to 7%
Account executive#
Show closed revenue, attainment, deal context, and how you win.
- Closed $980K in new business against an $850K quota (115%) in 2025, ranking #3 of 11 AEs
- Averaged $38K ACV across 26 deals with 60- to 90-day sales cycles
- Lifted demo-to-close conversion from 18% to 26% by adding a technical validation call before pricing
Senior or enterprise account executive#
Show large, complex deals, many stakeholders, and long cycles.
- Closed 3 seven-figure enterprise deals in 2025, including the company's largest new logo, a $1.6M three-year contract
- Achieved 131% of a $2.2M annual quota with 6- to 9-month cycles and buying committees of 8 to 12 people
- Led solutions engineers, legal, and security teams through 14 procurement reviews
Field and outside sales#
Outside reps sell face to face across a territory. Show territory growth, how you planned your routes, your distributor work, and in-person demos.
- Grew a 9-county territory from $2.1M to $2.7M in annual sales over 2 years, calling on 85 independent hardware stores
- Planned weekly routes across 40 accounts in 3 states, raising face-to-face visits from 18 to 26 a week
- Built joint business plans with 4 regional distributors, adding 60 new retail doors in 2025
- Ran 150+ on-site equipment demos a year at job sites and trade shows, converting 31% to orders
Account manager#
Show retention, expansion, and customer health.
- Managed 55 mid-market accounts worth $3.8M ARR, with 96% gross retention and 112% net revenue retention
- Closed 9 expansion deals worth $410K through quarterly business reviews tied to customer goals
- Started renewal talks 120 days out, cutting the average renewal cycle from 45 to 30 days
Sales manager#
Show team attainment, hiring, coaching, and forecasting.
- Lead a team of 8 AEs that finished 2025 at 108% of a $9.2M team quota, up from 91% the year before
- Hired 5 reps and cut average ramp time from 6 months to 4 with a structured onboarding plan
- Kept the quarterly forecast within 5% of actuals by running weekly deal reviews
If you're a rep aiming for this job, show leadership before the title. Mentoring new reps, running onboarding, or covering as interim team lead all count. Pair those bullets with your own steady attainment, since most managers are promoted from strong sellers.
Once you manage people, your headline number changes from your attainment to your team's. Start tracking team attainment, ramp time, and rep retention from your first month.
Sales resume summary and objective examples#
A summary states your role, segment, attainment, and one thing that sets you apart. Keep it to three sentences or fewer.
SDR: Sales development representative with 18 months in B2B software, booking an average of 14 qualified meetings a month against a goal of 10. Ranked #2 of 12 SDRs over 4 quarters. Ready for a closing role in SMB sales.
Field rep: Outside sales rep with 7 years selling building products to independent dealers across a 9-county territory. Grew territory sales 29% in 2 years and added 60 retail doors through distributor plans.
Sales manager: Sales manager with 10 years in industrial equipment sales, leading 8 reps across 5 states. Grew team attainment from 91% to 108% in one year and cut new-rep ramp time by a third.
Sales resume objective examples#
Use an objective when you're new to sales or changing careers. Lead with a result from your current work, then name the sales job you want.
Retail to SDR: Retail associate who ranked #1 of 18 in add-on sales for 6 straight months, seeking an SDR role where daily targets and fast feedback matter.
New grad to BDR: Marketing graduate who raised $12K for a campus charity through phone and email outreach, looking to start as a business development rep in B2B software.
Service rep to inside sales: Customer service rep who kept 41% of customers calling to cancel, against a team average of 27%. Ready to move into inside sales and bring the same persuasion to new buyers.
For more patterns, see our resume objective examples.
Entry-level sales resume with no experience#
Many strong sellers got their start in stores, restaurants, call centers, or fundraising. The skills carry over if you show them as results against a target.
Full entry-level sample: retail associate to SDR#
This one-page sample is for a retail associate applying for a first SDR job. It's invented, like every sample here.

SALES TRAINING AND TOOLS

EDUCATION
A.A., Business Administration | Alamo Valley Community College | 2023
SKILLS
Bilingual English and Spanish, consultative selling, objection handling, CRM data entry, Excel
Each bullet shows a target, a result, and a comparison point. That is how sales leaders think, so it reads as sales experience even without the title.
Turn other work into sales bullets#
Look for anything you persuaded people to do and anything you were measured on:
- Fundraising: dollars raised, new donors, renewal rate
- Recruiting: candidates placed, offers accepted, time to fill
- Customer service: save rate on cancel calls, upgrades sold
- Restaurants: average check size, upsell rate, repeat guests
Our guides to the retail sales associate resume and the customer service resume cover those roles. Our list of transferable skills helps you name what carries over.
Sales versus marketing roles#
Sales resumes lead with quota and revenue closed. Marketing resumes lead with pipeline generated and campaign results. For a hybrid sales-and-marketing role, lead with revenue closed and add one campaign or pipeline bullet. See our marketing resume guide if you're weighing both.
Format, length, and what to leave off#
Use reverse-chronological order, because a sales leader wants your recent results and your path. Keep it to one page at every stage. Resume Trail is built for single-page resumes. A manager with a long career can keep the last ten years in detail and cut older roles to one line.
| Role | Section order | Number to lead with |
|---|---|---|
| SDR or BDR | Summary, experience, skills, education | Meetings booked vs. goal |
| Account executive | Summary, experience, awards, skills, education | Attainment and rank |
| Field or outside rep | Summary, experience, territory, skills, education | Territory growth |
| Sales manager | Summary, team results, experience, skills, education | Team attainment |
| Career changer | Objective, sales highlights, experience, training | Best target-based result |
Under your name, write a headline with your role, segment or product, and a performance hook. For example: "Enterprise Account Executive | Cybersecurity | 3x President's Club."
A few things don't belong on the page:
- Pay details. Leave off base pay, commission, and on-target earnings (OTE). Save them for the negotiation.
- Team deals claimed as solo wins. Say what you owned, such as discovery or the business case.
- Only your latest title at a company. List each promotion with its own dates.
Education usually goes at the bottom. BLS notes that a high school diploma is often enough for nontechnical sales. Technical and scientific sales jobs usually need a bachelor's degree. If you sell a technical product, move a relevant degree higher.
Skills and tools for a sales resume#
A skills line should confirm your process and your tools in a few seconds. Group it: sales skills on one line, tools on another. Mirror the posting's words for the sales motion:
- Inside and SMB sales: high-velocity, inbound leads, demos, short sales cycle
- Mid-market and enterprise: multi-threading, buying committee, mutual action plan, MEDDICC
- Field and territory sales: territory planning, route planning, distributor relationships, trade shows
- Account management: renewals, upsell, cross-sell, net revenue retention, QBRs
Postings also ask for soft skills, like staying power and building trust. Prove them with numbers, not adjectives. "Rebuilt pipeline from $400K to $1.5M in two quarters after a territory change" shows resilience better than the word ever could.
To see which skills a posting stresses, paste your resume and the posting into the free resume job match tool. It lists the tools and skills from the posting that your resume doesn't mention yet. Stuck on repeated verbs like "closed" and "managed"? The resume synonym finder suggests swaps.
Next steps: get every number ready to defend#
Every number on your resume will be tested in the interview. Work through these steps in order:
- Pull your attainment reports, stack rankings, and award emails for the last three years.
- Fill in the attainment table for every closing role.
- Write one quota line per year, with amount, quota, percentage, period, and rank.
- Rewrite your top bullets so each has a number, its context, and what you did.
- Tailor your headline and summary to the segment and product in the posting.
- Prepare a one-minute story behind each major number.
If your current resume is a PDF, Word (.docx), or text file, Resume Trail can import it so you can rework the bullets without retyping. Import uses AI, so it asks for a Google sign-in. Our guide to behavioral interview questions helps you shape the stories. When the offer comes, our guide on how to negotiate salary covers base pay, commission, and on-target earnings.
