One-page resume templates that fit themselves

Every template here is one page, the only length this builder makes. The text size adjusts as you type, so what really differs is how much each one holds. To compare them, we set the same 274-word sample resume in each and noted the type size it reached. A bigger number means more room to spare.

Most room, for long histories

Generic

One column, Source Sans

Reached 13pt. One-line entries and narrow margins leave the most space, which suits several jobs or a long skills list.

Use this template: Generic

Institute

One column, Charter

Reached 13pt. Tight margins and one-line entries, with education in a results table.

Use this template: Institute

Campus

One column, Helvetica

Reached 12.8pt. Helvetica with one line per role keeps a long history readable.

Use this template: Campus

A balance of room and air

Orest

One column, Helvetica

Reached 11.8pt. Job title and employer take separate lines, which costs a little space.

Use this template: Orest

Best for shorter resumes

These look their best with less to say. A long resume in one of these sets in smaller type than the same words in a template above.

Crimson

One column, Source Sans

Reached 10.6pt, the smallest we measured. Large condensed headings need the space.

Use this template: Crimson

How the fit works

  • A short resume: the text grows until the page is full, up to 1.6 times the template's starting size.
  • A long resume: the text shrinks, down to 8pt.
  • Still too long: the Fit to one page button under the preview tightens line spacing and margins one step at a time.
  • If it still doesn't fit: trim a few bullets. The download waits until the resume fits, so a PDF never loses its last lines.

Sizes in this list are for our sample, and different typefaces look bigger or smaller at the same point size. Garamond, for one, reached 12.5pt but reads smaller than Helvetica at that size. Treat the numbers as a comparison, not a promise for your own text.

When one page is right, and when it isn't

One page suits students, new graduates and most people with under about seven years of relevant experience. Two pages is normal later in a career, and federal resumes have their own limit. This builder won't make those longer versions, so if you need two pages, use a different tool. How long a resume should be goes through it by career stage.

Fitting more without shrinking the text

  • Switch templates. Your content moves with you, and the same sample read 2.2pt larger in Generic than in Rover.
  • Cut bullets that repeat a skill. Keep the one with the best number. Our bullet point guide shows how to write them.
  • Shorten older jobs. One line with the title, employer and dates is often enough.
  • Group your skills into a few labeled rows, as the skills section guide describes.

Common questions

Can I make a two-page resume here?
No. Resume Trail only makes one-page resumes. If yours has to run longer, this isn't the right builder for it.
What's the smallest text size it will use?
8pt. That's small for most readers, who do best with about 10 to 12 points, so treat anything under 10pt as a sign to cut words rather than keep shrinking.
